However, is does seem that the Russian invasion has triggered more adverse consequences than the pandemic. It may be because these overlapped one after another that combined, they have caused multiple issues around FSR in many parts of the world. First the COVID-19 pandemic followed by the war in Ukraine. Over the past few years we have had two large scale shocks. 3 This is just one example of how the climate crisis in one part of the world can affect other distant places. Pakistan floods hit rice, cotton harvest, wheat planting, and threaten global supplies. But how has this natural disaster affected many other countries? Pakistan is the world’s fourth largest exporter of rice, 2 and this rice goes mainly to Africa and the Middle East with countries such as Kenya, Madagascar and Senegal have faced food shortages as a result. The massive flooding of Pakistan in 2022 has had devastating impacts on the country which will take many years to try to rectify. It is no longer a case of looking at problems that may arise in the future, but a combination of how these are currently impacting different countries in different ways and how these impacts will continue to escalate unless urgent actions are taken. On the global scale, our changing climate is without doubt the biggest issue we are facing. “The focus of FSR is clearly around the having the ability to cope with major shocks to a national food system”, explained Elliott.
